Founding of Bethany Lutheran Church
German-speaking Lutherans in the Roxborough-Manayunk area establish the Bethany German Lutheran Church (Bethanien Kirche) to serve the growing immigrant community seeking spiritual guidance and community.
1847
Establishment of Bethany Lutheran Cemetery
The congregation opens a cemetery at 378 Martin Street, which becomes the final resting place for many parishioners, including Civil War soldiers and mill workers.
1851
Dedication of the First Church Building
A modest church structure is erected on the cemetery grounds to accommodate the burgeoning congregation.
1873
Construction of the New Church at 401 Martin Street
To better serve its members, the congregation constructs a new, larger church across the street at 401 Martin Street.
2022
Final Worship Service
After 177 years of service, Bethany Lutheran Church holds its last worship service on November 20, 2022, closing a significant chapter in the community's history.
2024
Plans for Residential Conversion
Baker Street Partners purchases the property and begin plans to reimagine the historic church building and the parsonage into 18 residential units , ensuring the preservation of its architectural heritage within the Victorian Roxborough Historic District.
